Out of the Shadows of Minneapolis is an anthology of brief memoirs from students, staff and faculty at Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC). Within the volume are stories of struggle and perseverance, all filtered through the lens of people attending an Upper Midwestern community college. Out of the Shadows of Minneapolis is an open textbook, licensed under a
Creative Commons license (CCBY).
The anthology project originated from the African American Education Empowerment Program (AME), a college supported initiative launched by former MCTC president Phil Davis. This student-led program improves graduation and retention rates to support collegiate success among African-American men, women, felons, students with disabilities, and LGBTQ students. The program aims to build safe and productive learning spaces.
Out of the Shadows of Minneapolis was funded through an innovation funding grant from
Educational Innovations at Minnesota State.
